Justice Michael Slattery was educated at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview and studied Arts/Law at the University of Sydney. He was called to the Bar in 1978 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992. He was a Councilor of the Bar Council and President of the Bar Association from November 2005. He was sworn in as a Judge of the NSW Supreme Court on 25 May 2009.
His Honour was active in the Naval Reserve from 1989, serving as the head of the Navy Legal Panel from 2002 to 2006. He was appointed Judge Advocate General – Navy, as Commodore, in 2010 and Judge Advocate General – Australian Defense Force, as Rear Admiral, in 2014. He has recently retired from that role.
Justice Slattery was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in 2019 ‘for exceptional service to military law’ and the General Division in 2022 ‘for significant service to the law, to the judiciary and to professional associations’.
