Dr Hugh McDermott is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General of NSW and the State Member for Prospect. He holds a PhD in Laws, King’s College London; a Master of Labour Law and Relations, University of Sydney; and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours, University of Technology. Dr McDermott was admitted as a Solicitor in 1999, an Attorney-at-Law before The Grand Court of the Cayman Islands in 2006, called to the Bar of England and Wales (Inner Temple) in 2010 and the NSW Bar in 2011. Prior to entering Parliament, Dr McDermott practiced as a lawyer in Australia, Europe, the Caribbean and a number of off-shore jurisdictions. His practice specialised in financial crime, anti-money laundering, proceeds of crime and related commercial litigation. He also held the position of Postgraduate Director, Financial Crime Programs, at the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security. In 2015 Dr McDermott was elected to the Parliament of NSW. From 2015-2023, he was a Member of The Committee on the Ombudsman, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and the Crime Commission, Hugh was the Chair of the State Parliamentary Labor Party Legal Affairs Committee (2019-21), which focuses on the development of policy in consultation with the Shadow Attorney-General and relevant Shadow Cabinet members. He was appointment as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General of NSW in 2023.
